PIG
My students are very unaware of text messages and have had little to no experience sending or receiving texts. I only had one student in my classroom that had ever seen a text messages being sent by her mother; however, I was able to get them excited about a conversation on text messaging language through a discussion about Morse code. We talked about other kinds of codes, and eventually made it around to text messaging language. At the beginning of the discussion, I was only met with blank stares, but as we got going the students realized they used a lot of texting language. The most common “terms” used were lol, omg, and bff. The conversation died down after these two, but I put a few common ones on the board that they were able to decipher: ttyl, gr8, etc. My favorite part of the lesson was when I asked the students if they used any that they made up. Due to a very strange obsession with pie, my entire class uses ‘pig’ which apparently stands for “pie is good”. It was developed at the beginning of the year, but I didn’t find out about it until this discussion. The kids were very excited that it became a part of the lesson.
